Creative Space, Performance, and Owning Your Expertise
It’s July, the sun is out, and summer has a funny way of exposing something deeply true about ambitious people.
We spend all year trying to optimize every single minute of our lives. Then the season shifts, and suddenly, sitting behind a laptop feels like an uphill battle. But when you’re building something you truly believe in, you have to work, right?
Here’s a perspective shift: Maybe that friction isn’t laziness. Maybe that’s exactly what your creativity needs.
I’m currently in a massive season of expansion. Behind the scenes at MadlyCreative, I’ve been developing new branding offers that I am incredibly excited about. But I recently hit a wall and realized that pushing, forcing, and grinding to make these offers fit into a specific box wasn't serving anyone.
Sometimes, creative space is the strategy. Breaking your routine gives your brain room to breathe, allowing you to return with the exact breakthrough ideas your business and your brand actually need.
Let’s look at the unfiltered truths about brand voice, subconscious performance, and what happens when you finally stop asking for permission to say what you mean.
1. The Subconscious Trap of Second-Guessing
The Question:What am I noticing that capable women keep doing when managing a brand, without even realizing they’re doing it?
The women in my community are master-level experts. You are exceptionally good at what you do. Yet, the most common pattern I see is a subconscious habit of second-guessing your content before you hit publish.
I have a wonderful client whose rebrand we launched a few months ago. We spent months practicing her brand voice, and it is completely dialed in. Now, she’ll occasionally send me drafts of her social media posts for review. They are excellent. They sound exactly like her. She does not need my help to edit them—she just thinks she does.
We all have a deep-seated tendency to look for a second opinion or external validation before we speak our minds.
Here is the truth: I have spent a decade in marketing, social media, and branding. I have written thousands of lines of copy for major brands, small businesses, and myself. Not once has the world ended because of a post.
Has a piece of content underperformed? Absolutely. But visibility is a practice in confidence, not a search for perfection.
Perfection is an illusion that keeps you hidden.
Consistency is where the actual reward lives.
2. Stop Leaving Yourself Mid-Sentence
The Question:Where do I see people abandoning their own voice?
I see brilliant business owners leave themselves mid-sentence constantly. It usually stems from a subtle lack of assertiveness. You already know you’re qualified. You know exactly why you’re an expert.
The problem isn't your expertise; it's your articulation.
The Gap:
[ Your Deep Expertise ] ───( The Articulation Gap )───> [ A Generic Brand Identity ]In the online service industry, there is an obsession with trying to squeeze your life's work into pre-made niches and generic labels. But forcing your business into a standardized box does your genius no justice. Everyone possesses a highly specific, unique blend of skills.
My job at MadlyCreative isn't to invent a fake persona for you. It’s to look at your real, lived experience, bridge that gap, and package your actual DNA into language your audience can easily receive.
3. Professionalism Without the Performance
The Question:What used to feel important in business, but now just feels like a performance?
For a long time, there was this rigid rulebook on how you were "supposed" to show up to be taken seriously online. It felt like an endless performance of corporate professionalism.
But true professionalism doesn't require you to dilute your personality. You can build a highly profitable, premium online brand while remaining entirely yourself. You can say it how you want to say it, share what you want to share, and retain your standards.
Your audience doesn't want a sanitized version of you. They want your wit, your quirks, and your unique point of view. Ditch the performance.
4. The Brand Voice Document Is a Helper, Not a Cage
The Question:What marketing advice makes people feel trapped?
There are too many arbitrary marketing rules out there. A few months ago, I hosted a brand and messaging workshop where I taught the importance of creating a Brand Voice Document. It’s an invaluable asset—it gives you a definitive reference point for phrases, vocabulary, and positioning statements that anchor your business.
However, the goal of a brand voice document is never to lock you into a cage.
A Brand Voice Document is a living, breathing helper. It’s a compass, not a script.
If you find yourself staring at your brand guidelines feeling like you can't write a caption without checking a rulebook, change the rules. Your voice matters because it represents your raw perspective, and it should evolve as you do.
5. Why Voice Matters Personally
The Question:What part of my life first taught me that voice matters—not professionally, but personally?
This question gets to the very heart of why I started She Says It. If I am being entirely honest, the moment I realized that saying things clearly changes everything was during the times when I chose to say nothing at all.
I look back at the moments in my life where I had something important to say, but I chose to keep it quiet. Times where speaking up would have made the situation entirely better. Today, I can look back at that younger version of myself with appreciation, but it fueled a deep mission inside of me.
We only have a limited amount of time on this planet. Spending your days filtering your true thoughts, holding back your boundaries, or watering down your business goals to make them "easier to receive" is a waste of your potential.
Your Summer Challenge: Just Send the Text
What would change tomorrow if you finally believed that trusting your voice was completely enough? You would be happier, more content, and more at peace with what you are building.
So, let’s leave the rigid routines behind for a moment. Enjoy the summer, step outside, and tap into that joy.
Here is my single challenge for you this week: That text message you’ve been holding back from the group chat? That post you've been editing over and over in your drafts?
Stop asking for permission. Don't look for a second opinion. Just send it.
