Embracing Joy and Perseverance: Lessons from a 12K Journey

Today, I'm reflecting on a recent accomplishment; a 12K race and what taught me about joy and perseverance. Running, for many, is not just a physical challenge but a mental one as well. And today’s reflection is all about overcoming those mental hurdles one step at a time.

Tackling the Hill at Mile Three

During a 12K in Tacoma, Washington, the run seemed manageable until about the three-mile mark when a daunting hill came into view. This wasn't just any hill: it was the kind that made even the fastest, most talented runners decide to walk. Running by the beautiful Puget Sound, I felt good initially, keeping a slower pace to conserve energy. But as I turned the corner and faced the hill, I noticed everyone around me was walking. Despite two ACL surgeries and a meniscus surgery, my stubborn mindset declared I wouldn’t walk. But reality hit three-quarters up the hill, my heart rate soaring, reminding me of my limitations. Sometimes, it takes courage to walk at your pace rather than pushing yourself beyond limits.

Finding Joy in Small Victories

The race continued, and doubt crept in as I thought about the miles ahead. Finishing strong showed me the power of small victories and the joy they bring. Throughout the race, I realized joy is a conscious choice I’ve been cultivating. Despite knee pain and desire to quit, I pushed through, jogging even if it was slow. My goal wasn’t to break records but to prove to myself that I could finish what I started and tackle the San Francisco half-marathon in July. I have run 190 miles this year, and each run, joyful or not, has bolstered my resilience.

The Power of Community

One of the most inspiring elements of this experience was the community. Being surrounded by 7,000 people of all ages—highlighted the incredible support and energy present at such events. It’s a reminder of how exhilarating it can be to witness and be part of a collective human effort towards a shared goal.

Reflections and Encouragement

Running isn’t easy. It demands dedication and brings doubts. But with each milestone, from a 5K last October to the approaching half-marathon, I've learned our bodies often outperform the limitations of our minds. Running serves as time for creativity and self-reflection, an opportunity to feel proud.

Life has tough moments, and amidst the chaos, finding little sparks of joy is essential. Despite lingering doubts about the upcoming half-marathon, I find motivation in the journey. I encourage you to seek out joy, whether it’s summer vibes or shared moments around events like the World Cup: embrace what makes you feel alive.

Conclusion

The journey taught me that sometimes you walk before you conquer each hill. And that's okay. Remember to look out for creative challenges and joy prompts on my Instagram. Trust in yourself to find joy, even in tough stretches. Sometimes, it takes walking a bit to keep moving forward, and that’s a lesson worth learning.
